Ikea announced back in August 2018 that they plan to release a power outlet (smart plug) in October 2018 that’s worth USD 10. The said power outlet is part of the Tradfri smart product line.
But Ikea had some problems in the launching of the power outlet. Those became available in stores in the US and the UK a month late. Also, according to 9to5Mac, they came without the Apple HomeKit support.
The smart plug is affordable for its price. It lets the user turn on and off their appliances using a magnetic remote control, which is part of the USD 15 control outlet kit.
If your household appliances are not yet set up in the Tradfri ecosystem, the USD 30 Gateway can be purchased, so you can control the smart plug using the Tradfri app.
The USD 30 Gateway is also used to connect other Tradfri smart devices like lights and motion sensors to virtual assistants namely: Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and Alexa (Amazon).
Tradfri team posted on Reddit that there’s no timeline yet for the Apple HomeKit integration, but when it happens, it will be available via a Gateway update.
